Windows XP Service Pack 2
Microsoft's second Service Pack (SP2) for Windows XP (home and professional) is set
for full release in August 2004. Microsoft releases Service Packs in the same capacity
as Critical Updates, that is to say through their Automatic Update process. As many users have set AutoUpdate to
download and install without any prompting from the service it is important for users to be aware of,
and understand the changes and implications of installing SP2.
You can download Windows XP Service Pack 2 from this web site.
Service Pack 2 focuses mainly on increased security technologies for your computer that will help
to improve the ability of Windows XP-based computers to withstand malicious attacks from viruses and
worms. The technologies include:
- Network protection
- Memory protection
- Safer email handling
- Enhanced browsing security
- Improved computer maintenance
Within the scope of these five areas there are five obvious changes most users will encounter, and numerous
updates that take place in the background and which will generally only affect developers. This document will only
cover those changes that will affect the average user.
To obtain more detailed information regarding the technical
specifics of this Service Pack there are many documents available on Microsoft's
Windows XP support site.
As well, Microsoft provides a
detailed SP2 description on the TechNet site.
If you have installed SP2 and are experiencing new problems,
